GSM Abis

The Abis channel is an internal interface connecting the Base Transceiver Station (BTS) and the Base Station Controller (BSC) in GSM cellular networks. The GSM Abis interface is used to control the radio equipment and to allocate radio frequency in the BTS.

RAD’s ACE-3200 cell site gateway and Vmux-400 Abis optimization gateway enable mobile operators to improve GSM backhaul efficiency and reduce cellular transmission bandwidth, while maintaining voice service quality. RAD’s GSM Abis solutions introduce substantial cost savings where bandwidth is constrained or expensive, such as over international leased lines, satellite and microwave links. By optimizing the GSM Abis protocol and multiplexing the traffic from underutilized E1 circuits, they reduce the number of E1 trunks required for BTS-BSC backhaul by 50% and more, freeing up the backhaul connection for additional traffic or data services.
