Japan’s Mobile Operators Deploy RAD’s Pseudowire Backhaul Solution to Quickly Restore Service Following Earthquake and Tsunami

Japan’s mobile operators have announced that service to the country’s northern Tohoku region, which was the scene of March’s massive earthquake and tsunami, has been successfully restored.

Along with so much other critical infrastructure, mobile networks along Tohoku’s east coast were destroyed as a result of the earthquake and tsunami. Because some base transceiver stations (BTSs) are ATM based and backhauling is done over IP links, the quickest way to reestablish service while shortening roll-out time was by deploying cell site gateways that perform ATM pseudowire conversion from STM-1 to IP. The cell site gateways that mobile operators selected were the ACE-3100 and IPmux-24 from RAD Data Communications, which was able to supply the devices within a few weeks, enabling rapid deployment and service provisioning.

RAD’s ACE-3100 and IPmux-24 connect one or several BTSs and node Bs over shared access lines, to ATM, SDH/SONET or packet switched backbones. Incorporating pseudowire technology with high precision clock recovery capabilities, they support effective delivery of 2G TDM and 3G ATM services over Ethernet, IP or MPLS networks. The ACE-3100 and IPmux-24 offer reliable performance and feature advanced clock recovery mechanisms to assure the transport of high quality voice and data services.

“RAD was pleased to be able to quickly meet this urgent need and assist the country’s mobile operators to restore service to affected areas,” stated Dr. Oren Kaufman, President of RAD Japan K.K. “Our response is a sign of our ongoing commitment to the entire Japanese telecommunications market.”
